Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh is considering resigning from all positions following his failed push for the party to exit the coalition government, prompting analysts to assess the impact on the nationalist wing. International Islamic University Malaysia political scientist Syaza Shukri told Malaysiakini that without Akmal, Umno Youth would likely become “less vocal and less forward,” adopting a more consensus-driven approach rather than being fully subservient to central leadership.
Akmal Exits Umno?
She noted that while the wing has long been more ethnonationalist than the main party, Akmal amplified this through populist rhetoric positioning youth as the outspoken grassroots voice. His departure follows Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s rejection of withdrawal from the government.
