A 66-year-old Buddhist monk in Seoul has been sentenced to one year in prison for repeated violent attacks on his common-law wife. The Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of aggravated assault and intimidation after incidents including striking her neck, grabbing her hair, and threatening her with knives while intoxicated.

The defendant has a long history of violence, with 39 previous convictions, including a 14-month prison term in 2005. Despite the victim’s pleas for leniency, the court deemed imprisonment necessary due to his repeated offenses. The specific Buddhist order he belongs to has not been disclosed.
