Sixty-four million light-years away in the constellation Vulpecula lies HD 189733 b, a strikingly cobalt-blue exoplanet first discovered in 2005. Despite its inviting colour, the world is a hellscape: its atmosphere reaches 2,000°F (1,093°C), driving winds up to 5,400 mph—seven times the speed of sound.

NASA’s Spitzer and Hubble telescopes revealed the blue hue comes not from oceans but from silicate-laden clouds in a blowtorch-like environment. Instead of water, the planet experiences sideways rain of molten glass shards, creating a deadly, razor-sharp storm. Scientists describe it as “death by a thousand cuts,” highlighting one of the most hostile known exoplanets.
