European countries led by Britain and Germany are discussing plans to strengthen NATO’s military presence in Greenland, responding to concerns triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments on Arctic security and his assertions that the United States must control the strategically vital island.
NATO Troops in Greenland
Donald Trump has ordered his special forces commanders to draw up a plan for the invasion of Greenland – but is being resisted by senior military figures, The Mail on Sunday has learned.
The move aims to signal Europe’s commitment to collective security in the Arctic amid rival ambitions from Russia and China and amid Trump’s statements that the U.S. should “own” Greenland to preempt other powers. Denmark and Nordic diplomats have rejected claims of foreign naval activity near Greenland, and the island’s status within NATO remains firmly tied to Danish sovereignty and international law.
