TUAS: A 26-year-old Malaysian lorry driver was arrested on January 2 at Singapore’s Tuas Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle 8,000 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) detected anomalies in the vehicle’s X-ray scan, initially declared as carrying plastic products.

Physical inspection revealed the contraband concealed within the legitimate cargo. The driver was detained immediately, and the cigarettes were handed over to Singapore Customs for investigation. In the first 11 months of 2025, authorities seized 3.24 million packets of illegal cigarettes, nearly matching 2024 levels and reflecting a significant ongoing challenge despite heightened enforcement. A recent 15% excise duty hike in 2023 may be driving demand for cheaper contraband.
