KUALA LUMPUR – The Court of Appeal on Jan 20 upheld the Malaysian government’s petition to overturn a High Court ruling that awarded damages to the family of murdered Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu. Justice Muniandy Kannyappan announced the decision via video conference, ending the family’s victory in a civil suit filed over 18 years ago following her 2006 killing. The three-judge bench rejected the government’s liability but ordered Altantuya’s former lover, Abdul Razak Baginda, to pay more than RM1.38 million in damages to the family.

Lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said the family will appeal to the Federal Court. Altantuya’s father, Shaariibuu Setev, stressed he seeks justice and a sincere apology rather than money. Abdul Razak has not commented on appealing. The case stems from Altantuya’s abduction and brutal murder, linked to a French submarine deal involving then-defence minister Najib Razak.
