Smart lanes on Malaysian highways have shown lower accident rates compared with periods before their activation, according to Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who spoke in Parliament on Wednesday. The minister highlighted examples such as the smart lane from Putra Mahkota to Southville, which saw a 22% drop in accidents, and the stretch between R&R Rawang and the Rawang interchange recording a 74% reduction.
Smart Lanes Reduce Traffic Accidents, Parliament Told
Nanta emphasised that most incidents in smart lanes were linked to human error rather than road design, including speeding, unsafe lane changes without signaling, and using the lanes outside designated hours. Smart lanes involve opening emergency shoulders during peak periods to ease congestion, with advance notice signs and CCTV monitoring to aid safety.
The Works Ministry also collaborates with highway concessionaires, the Malaysian Highway Authority and enforcement agencies to ensure proper use and periodic safety audits of smart lane zones, with Nanta affirming there is no compromise on safety standards despite the lanes helping reduce travel time.
