Two people have died and several others are feared buried under landslides on New Zealand’s North Island. This follows days of heavy rain that caused widespread flooding and power outages. The fatalities occurred at Welcome Bay. Meanwhile, rescue teams are searching rubble at a popular Mount Maunganui campground, an extinct volcano and sacred Māori site.

Authorities report no signs of life and estimate missing include at least one young girl. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described the nation as “heavy with grief” over the “profound tragedy,” with the east coast resembling a “war zone.” Sniffer dogs and rescuers comb through crushed caravans and tents in the high-risk area, vowing to continue operations overnight for the best outcome.
