U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly ruled out using military force to acquire Greenland, retreating from earlier, more aggressive rhetoric during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The shift follows internal White House pressure from senior aides who pushed against forceful approaches, favouring a diplomatic strategy after weeks of tension with Denmark and concerns among NATO allies over Trump’s hardline stance.
Trump Rules Out Military Force for Greenland
Trump also stepped back from threatened tariffs on European nations tied to his Greenland ambitions, saying a framework for a future deal has been formed with NATO Secretary- General Mark Rutte that focuses on broader Arctic cooperation rather than forceful takeover. Despite the retreat, Trump’s long-running interest in Greenland — a strategically crucial island — continues to shape geopolitical talks at the summit.
The reversal reflects internal divisions within the U.S. administration, where officials were reportedly split on how aggressively to pursue control of Greenland — with some urging caution to avoid alarming allies. Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected any sale or coercive control of the territory, emphasising that its future should be decided by its people.
