A recent comparison linking corruption to food choices, including references to the smell of pork, belacan and budu, has drawn criticism for being inappropriate and confusing. Addressing the issue, Selangor Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Election Director Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan said such analogies blur important distinctions and risk inflaming sensitivities in a multicultural society.
He explained that food choices are closely tied to culture, identity and personal beliefs, all of which deserve respect, while corruption is a serious public issue involving integrity, the law and moral accountability. As such, the two should not be discussed on the same footing.

Dr Sathia added that traditional foods like belacan and budu should not be labelled as “smelly” or negative based solely on their odour, nor should they be used as references to explain corruption. He warned that weak or inaccurate analogies in public discourse can mislead the public and create unnecessary misunderstanding between different races and religions.
