TAIPEI – American climber Alex Honnold, 40, achieved a historic feat on Jan 25 by free-solo climbing Taipei 101, Taiwan’s tallest building at 508 metres, without ropes, harness or safety equipment. Famous for his 2017 ropeless ascent of Yosemite’s El Capitan, Honnold became the first to free-solo the skyscraper. Hundreds gathered at the base to cheer, while millions watched the live Netflix broadcast titled Skyscraper Live.

Dressed in a red T-shirt and custom shoes, he swiftly scaled the south-east face in clear weather, pausing midway to wave at spectators. Honnold called it his “lifelong dream” and the biggest urban free-solo ever attempted. Onlookers described the climb as brave, terrifying and unforgettable.
