SHAH ALAM – Malaysia’s High Court on Jan 23, 2026, dismissed celebrity preacher Da’i Syed’s appeal against his rape conviction and sentence. Real name Syed Shah Iqmal Syed Mohd Shaiful, he was found guilty of raping a 23-year-old woman in a Shah Alam condominium in September 2019. The Sessions Court sentenced him in August 2024 to 10 years’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane. After serving 21 days, he was granted a temporary stay pending appeal.
Appeal Rejected
High Court Judge Adlin Abdul Majid upheld the decision, citing strong evidence and no errors by the lower court, describing the sentence as reasonable and proportionate. The preacher cried in the dock as his plea for a stay—citing his newborn child and role as sole breadwinner—was rejected due to the offence’s severity and impact on the victim. His wife Hana hugged him after the ruling and said she leaves the matter to God and lawyers.
