Geoscientists have officially recognised Zealandia (Te Riu-a-Māui in Māori), a continent long speculated about and hidden in plain sight for almost 375 years. Covering 1.89 million square miles, Zealandia once formed part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana alongside Western Antarctica and Eastern Australia over 500 million years ago. Early explorers, including encounters with Māori communities, heard hints of a vast eastern landmass, yet no clear evidence emerged.

It was only in 2017 that geologists from New Zealand’s GNS Science and international teams confirmed Zealandia’s existence through detailed mapping and evidence. Most of the continent remains submerged beneath the ocean, serving as a striking example of how something massive can remain overlooked despite being “very obvious” once properly studied. Scientists continue investigating why it began separating from Gondwana.
