KOTA BHARU: More than 800 Malaysian couples tied the knot in Southern Thailand throughout 2025, with most seeking polygamous unions or evading family disapproval. Deputy President of Narathiwat Islamic Religious Council, Abdul Aziz Che Mamat, revealed that daily marriages have dropped to about three couples from seven to nine previously.
Polygamy Trends Amid Border Restrictions
The decline follows the December 2024 border closure by Kelantan police, complicating passport access. Offices in Golok and Takbai have shut, requiring couples without a wali to wed at the main Narathiwat office, while those with guardians can still use local imams.
