Chetti Pusam and Thaipusam Chariot Processions Dazzle Penang

GEORGE TOWN – The Chettiar community’s ‘Chetti Pusam’ celebration on the eve of Thaipusam captivated Penang with elaborately decorated chariots, colourful processions, and 90 peacock kavadi. Thousands of devotees and tourists lined the streets to witness the Golden Chariot, introduced in 2017, carrying the sacred vel of Lord Murugan from Queen Street to the Sri Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple.

Later, attention turned to the 132-year-old Silver Chariot, built in Tamil Nadu and shipped to Penang in 1894, which carried Lord Murugan’s statue from Penang Road to the Nattukottai Chettiar Temple, pulled by pairs of bulls rotated for their welfare.
