Singapore Customs Bust Cigarette Smuggling Attempt at Woodlands Checkpoint

Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers uncovered a cigarette smuggling attempt during an enhanced check at Woodlands Checkpoint on Jan. 22. In a video shared on ICA’s Facebook page, officers were seen using hammers to break apart furniture pieces in a Malaysia-registered van.

Hidden inside were more than 150 cartons and 60 loose packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes. The 32-year-old Malaysian driver was arrested, with the case referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation. ICA highlighted that profiling combines officers’ expertise with technology such as X-ray scanners and data analytics to identify high-risk vehicles before entry.
