Malaysia has announced an immediate ban on the import of electronic waste (e-waste) as part of intensified efforts to protect the environment and curb hazardous material entering the country. The prohibition comes amid growing international concern that Malaysia had become a major destination for non-recyclable and unsafe e-waste shipments.
Malaysia imposes e-waste import ban to curb hazardous waste and environmental risk
Under the new policy, e-waste is included in the “Absolute Prohibition” category of regulated imports under Malaysia’s customs laws, meaning no electronic waste may be brought into the country. Authorities cited environmental and health risks as key reasons for the move, which also aligns with global efforts to manage toxic materials more responsibly.
The ban will be supported by enhanced enforcement and monitoring measures, with the government also considering a temporary moratorium on plastic waste imports. The policy shift reflects growing public demand for stronger waste management standards and environmental governance.
