ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A suicide bomber struck a Shiite mosque during Friday prayers in Pakistan’s capital, killing at least 31 people and injuring 169, according to police officials.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as bloodied worshippers lay on the mosque floor amid shattered glass and debris, while dozens of wounded were carried into the garden outside as cries for help echoed.

Police said the attacker was intercepted at the mosque’s gate before detonating the explosives. Authorities have yet to release an official death toll, but confirmed “multiple casualties.”
The attack underscores the persistent threat of sectarian violence in Pakistan, where Shiite mosques have often been targeted by extremist groups.
