KUALA LUMPUR — The family of murdered Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu has returned more than RM4.8 million in damages, including interest, to the Malaysian government after the Court of Appeal ruled the state was not liable for her 2006 death. Lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo confirmed the funds, previously held in a trustee account, were repaid in full.

A similar repayment was made regarding political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, in line with court directions. Sangeet stressed Altantuya’s father sought accountability, not money, and the swift return underscored that stance. The repayment followed a 2025 High Court order pending appeal.
“The amount paid earlier under the Shah Alam High Court’s conditional stay order — covering the full judgment sum and accrued interest — was returned completely to the Malaysian government yesterday,” she said in a statement.
