Airlines now being forced into huge, hourslong diversions to avoid flying over Iran

1 min read

European airlines are experiencing significant delays as flights from the Middle East are rerouted to avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace. Eurowings Flight 1153 from Dubai to Stuttgart made two stopovers, first in Thessaloniki for refuelling and later in Nuremberg due to nighttime restrictions, arriving 11 hours later than usual. Eurowings said the detour was precautionary, citing longer distances and headwinds.

Wizz Air confirmed similar stops in Cyprus or Thessaloniki for refuelling and crew changes. Budget airlines are more affected due to smaller aircraft ranges, while carriers like British Airways and Air France use larger jets that avoid fuel stops.
