An American traveller sparked online controversy by claiming Malaysian food is better than Singapore’s—and costs only a third as much. Brent Farris, a frequent visitor to Malaysia, also insisted Malaysia has superior durians, despite calling it Singapore’s “national fruit.”

His Facebook post quickly went viral. In response, Singaporean hawkers and food personalities weighed in, some dismissing his comments as attention-seeking, while others acknowledged the durian praise. 

Chef Benny Se Teo quipped that good food isn’t just about price, and urged Farris to return when he needs “Wi-Fi, safety, and a napkin.” The debate continues—tongue-in-cheek but fiercely nationalistic.
