This is a crazy story of an Australian jailed for spitting at police in Singapore: An Australian man was jailed in Singapore on Friday (Oct 30) for spitting at police, threatening officers and urinating in their direction during a 32-hour episode that began at Changi Airport, AsiaOne reported.

Morris David, 52, was sentenced to five months and six weeks’ jail and fined an additional S$5,000 (RM16,000), according to court documents. His jail term was backdated to July 16, the day he entered Singapore and a day before he was remanded.

Australian Jailed: Spitting at police

David landed at Changi Airport from Bali on July 16 while on his way to Australia. He had suffered a head injury in Bali and was taken by wheelchair to the Terminal 3 clinic, but left after learning he would have to pay.

Police were first called after he became belligerent with a manager at the Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Gold Lounge. He was sent to Changi General Hospital (CGH) and later returned to the airport.

He then entered the departure hall with an invalid boarding pass and demanded lounge access and to be allowed to board. An auxiliary police officer escorted him to the airline’s check-in counter, and David was loud and vulgar towards the officer. He was also verbally abusive to other officers while trying to call a taxi, and threatened one who touched his shoulder.

Threats and abuse at hospital

Back at CGH, David was sedated under police watch. The court heard that he threatened six officers, spat at them several times and tried to bite an officer as they attempted to put a mask on him.

He asked twice to use the toilet and was offered a potty and a urinal bottle. He then threatened to defecate and throw faeces, and eventually urinated towards the officers.

District Judge Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz described his conduct as a “prolonged and flagrant disregard for authority”, CNA reported. She said the degrading and unsanitary nature of the urinating was particularly reprehensible.

Prosecution sought longer term

The prosecution had asked for eight months and one week’s jail, arguing that David showed no respect for local police and committed several offences within a short period.

His defence said he was remorseful, apologetic and prepared to face the consequences and apologise to the police. It asked the court for a fine and a shorter jail term.

The judge said the sentence signals that such behaviour would not be tolerated.
