The return of seven “heritage” footballers to Malaysia’s national team appears unlikely, even after serving FIFA’s 12-month ban, said sports lawyer Nik Erman Nik Roseli. He explained that despite holding Malaysian citizenship, the players — including Hector Hevel and Joao Figueiredo — fail to meet FIFA’s five-year residency rule.
Banned Heritage Players
Their eligibility would only be restored after residing in Malaysia for five consecutive years. With age and financial factors also limiting prospects, few Super League clubs are expected to sign them. FIFA recently upheld the bans and fines, while FAM considers appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
