Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) made history by advancing to the Asian Champions League Elite (ACLE) quarterfinals for the first time, despite a 1-0 defeat to Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the second leg of the Round of 16. The Southern Tigers progressed with a 3-2 aggregate victory, following their 3-1 win in the first leg at Stadium Sultan Ibrahim.
ACLE Quarterfinals
JDT displayed disciplined defending throughout the match, frustrating Hiroshima’s attempts to overturn the deficit. Their resilience was tested when Kosuke Kinoshita converted a 90th-minute penalty after a VAR review, but JDT held firm during injury time to secure progression.
This achievement marks a significant improvement from last season, when JDT exited at the Round of 16. The team now looks forward to their historic quarterfinal clash.
