PETALING JAYA – Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail defended the National Registration Department’s (JPN) process in issuing birth certificates for the grandparents of seven football players recently sanctioned by Fifa. He said JPN acted under Section 10A of the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1957, which allows registration upon sufficient evidence of birth.

Saifuddin stressed that JPN found no document falsification and that all seven players met Malaysia’s citizenship requirements. The controversy arose after Fifa accused the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) of submitting doctored documents claiming the players’ grandparents were Malaysian. Saifuddin clarified that Fifa’s concerns did not involve JPN’s documents, noting the department’s compliance with all legal and constitutional provisions.
