PETALING JAYA, Aug 30 — Formal negotiations between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) on cooperation in the upcoming Melaka state election are expected to commence once the legislative assembly is dissolved. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that only informal discussions have taken place so far, with Melaka BN chief and menteri besar Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh tasked to lead the talks.
“We are leaving it to Rauf. I think he will hold formal discussions after the state assembly is dissolved. I have already held discussions with the entire Melaka Umno political bureau, and the matter has been brought to the Supreme Council,” Zahid said after an event in Serdang.
BN-PH Talks
PH election director Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said he was awaiting Rauf to initiate formal talks, noting that Rauf wanted to wait for policy decisions from BN’s central leadership before proceeding.
Melaka has 28 state seats. In the 2021 state election, BN won 21 seats to form the government, PH secured five, and PN two. The current state government’s mandate expires on Dec 31.
