In Putrajaya, the Court of Appeal reduced Kamaruddin Abd Rahim’s death penalty to 30 years in prison for murdering an unlicensed money lender over a debt dispute. The three-judge panel, led by Justice Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, also imposed 12 strokes of the cane, with Kamaruddin’s sentence starting from his arrest on Sept 11, 2017.

Justice Ahmad Zaidi dismissed claims that the High Court judicial commissioner unfairly recalled prosecution witnesses, stating the evidence confirmed Kamaruddin’s intent to cause fatal injuries. The court found no grounds for the defense of grave and sudden provocation, but allowed the appeal to reduce the sentence.
