China’s President Xi Jinping has urged senior military officers to intensify ideological rectification and political discipline as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) prepares for its centenary in 2027. Speaking at the National Defence University in Beijing, Xi stressed that corruption and self-interest were “fundamentally against the party’s nature and purpose,” calling on officers to restore the PLA’s traditions and ensure equality before laws and regulations.
Clean Military
The push follows a sweeping anti-corruption campaign that toppled dozens of top generals, including members of the Central Military Commission. Xi emphasized that the PLA must “always stay pure” to meet its centenary goal, linking discipline to combat readiness. He urged leaders to set examples in truth-telling, tolerance of differing views, and fostering candid reporting.
General Yang Zhibin of the Eastern Theatre Command echoed Xi’s call, pledging to strengthen combat capabilities through ideological purification and rooting out the “pernicious influence” of fallen officers.
