This week’s MRT Putrajaya Line disruption near Damansara Damai highlighted how cable theft can paralyze modern rail systems. Malaysia is not alone — countries from the UK to South Africa face billions in losses annually due to stolen copper.

Railways operate on a “fail-safe” principle: when signalling cables are cut, trains stop automatically to prevent accidents. Prasarana reported RM20.6 million in losses from 2023, with KTMB suffering 1,300 hours of delays in 2025. 

Rising global copper demand from AI data centres, EVs, and renewable energy has fueled theft. Authorities now push harsher penalties and tighter scrap market monitoring to protect critical infrastructure.
