A former Cameron Highlands fire station chief has been charged with accepting a RM2,000 bribe, Bernama reported. Wan Muhammad Faiz Wan Asri, 31, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Judge Sazlina Safie at the Sessions Court in Kuantan on Friday (Oct 30).
Cameron Highlands Fire Chief Faces Bribe Charge
The former head of the Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Station is accused of receiving the cash, without consideration, from a man who had dealings connected to his official duties. The man was not named in the report.
According to the charge, the offence allegedly took place at about 9.45pm on May 28, 2025, in the compound of the Puncak Arabella Multipurpose Hall in Cameron Highlands.
He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which Bernama said carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Bail Set Lower Than MACC Sought
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuting officer Rais Adha Ramli asked for bail of RM12,000 with one surety. He also sought conditions that the accused report monthly to the nearest MACC office and not interfere with prosecution witnesses.
Defence lawyer Ahmad Nur Faid Afiq Aziz pleaded for a lower amount, telling the court his client was the sole breadwinner earning about RM3,000 a month. He said the accused supports his wife, a child and both his parents, and had to dip into his savings.
The court allowed bail of RM5,000. The judge ordered the accused to surrender his passport to the court, report to the MACC every month until the case is concluded, and not disturb any witnesses.
Case Returns to Court in December
The court fixed Dec 11 for the next mention of the case.
