Johor MACC Graft Probe: Five Remanded Over RM1 Mil Bribes

Abducting Palestinian, Man Jailed Three Months for Impersonating MACC Officer

Five people, among them two officers from a federal enforcement agency, have been remanded in a Johor MACC graft probe over about RM1 million in bribes they allegedly solicited and received from a foreign worker agency, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said on Wednesday (Oct 28).

Johor MACC director Datuk Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid said in a statement that the other three suspects are foreign worker agents, according to Bernama.

Five-Day Remand Until Nov 1

Magistrate A. Dhilip Nair issued a five-day remand order against all five, running until Nov 1, at the Johor Bahru Court Complex on Wednesday after allowing the commission’s application, Bernama reported.

The suspects, three men and two women aged between their 40s and 60s, were picked up between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday (Oct 27) in operations carried out in Selangor and Johor, Hazrul Shazreen said.

The MACC has not named the suspects, the enforcement agency the two officers work for, or the foreign worker agency said to be involved.

Johor MACC Graft Probe Covers 2018 to 2025

According to the Johor MACC director, preliminary investigations found that the five are believed to have conspired to seek and accept bribes so that no enforcement action would be taken against foreign workers placed under the agency’s supervision.

The offences are believed to have been committed between 2018 and 2025. Investigators believe the money, totalling about RM1 million, was moved through 44 online transfers during that period.

The Star reported that Hazrul Shazreen also confirmed the arrests when contacted by the newspaper.

Investigation Under MACC Act

The case is being investigated under Sections 16(a)(B) and 16(b)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, Hazrul Shazreen said.

He added that the probe followed an operation carried out by the MACC Intelligence Division. The suspects remain in custody while investigations continue under the remand order.
