In June 2012, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad first said he regretted making the statement that his government would have no Internet censorship. That was in the 1990s. But later, in 2012 and 2014, Mahathir expressed regret.
“When I said there should be no censorship of the Internet, I really did not realise the power of the Internet, the power to undermine moral values, the power to create problems and agitate people,” he then said.
Now, the current government has a set of rules to regulate the internet, the social media rules and getting social media giants to abide by the country’s Content Forum. Despite expressing regrets, Mahathir did not ban or control or regulate the internet while there were no real social media then, but online forums existed.
