Chief Justice retires as Anwar resists pressure from partners to extend Maimun’s contract

1 min read

Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, retiring today at age 66, said she has “no regrets” after leading Malaysia’s judiciary for six years. Speaking during her farewell at the Palace of Justice, she stated it was never her dream to become Chief Justice but felt honoured and blessed to have served. She expressed no disappointment over not receiving a six-month extension, emphasising that completing her term in good health was itself a blessing. PM Anwar Ibrahim faced intense pressure from some of his partners in PH to extend her stay. Yesterday, DAP urged a six-month extension for Tengku Maimun and Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar, citing their reforms and integrity, denying politicisation amid criticism over judicial appointment issues.
