Two people, including a suspect, are dead after a shooting at a Citibank office complex in suburban Tampa, Florida, on Wednesday (Nov 4), the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said, according to the Associated Press. Sheriff Chad Chronister described the attack as targeted. “We believe this is a targeted incident,” he wrote on X.

Citibank campus shooting response

The campus, in the Brandon area, has four three-storey office buildings that house thousands of the bank’s employees, the AP said. More than 360 deputies swarmed the site, and ABC News reported that heavily armed deputies and armoured vehicles were deployed, with a law enforcement source saying agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would also respond.

Local broadcaster FOX 13 reported that an armed security guard shot and killed a gunman who had driven onto the Citibank Center campus and shot a woman outside before going into the cafeteria. Authorities quoted by ABC News had not said how the victim or the suspect died.

Police radio traffic described a floor-by-floor search, with officers finding people sheltering in locked rooms and closets and escorting them out, the AP said. Employees were asked to gather at a reunification point in the car park of a nearby Sheraton hotel, ABC News reported. FOX 13 said deputies told drivers to avoid Queen Palms Drive and Falkenburg Road.

Doug Merritt told the AP his son had fled the campus after hearing gunshots. “I wanted him to get to safety,” he said.

Victim and suspect not yet named

Authorities had not released the names of the victim or the suspect, or given a motive, in the reports available on Wednesday evening. The AP said it was not immediately known whether anyone else had been hurt. Citigroup said in a statement it was aware of an incident at the complex and was cooperating with authorities, while the sheriff’s office said it would provide updates as they became available.
