There have been concerns towards the younger generation reading less. An X user shared his two cents regarding the matter. He claims that the prices of comics have increased dramatically in the last few years, as previously you could buy one for RM5, now they’re RM120.

However, others state that the comparison is not a fair one. Comparing a local Malay comic and a foreign one in Kinokuniya are a stark comparison. The prices have increased, especially if the younger generation is buying the original copy. But they are not as expensive as the original poster says it to be.
Nowadays the declining reading rates are possibly in lieu of the popularity of video consumption on TikTok. The videos there are free and readily available, while books may face limited availability along with the much higher asking prices.
