100 crocodiles escaped in January in Batam from a farm

1 min read

The Riau Islands Legislative Council (DPRD) has urged the closure of a crocodile farm on Bulan Island, Batam, after over 100 crocodiles escaped in January, raising fears of attacks. Speaker Iman Sutiawan criticized the farm, managed by PT Perkasa Jagat Karunia, for never paying taxes in 36 years. Authorities have recaptured most crocodiles, but doubts remain over the numbers. The farm, previously used for leather production, now feeds dead pigs to crocodiles. A joint task force, including the Navy and police, has worked to contain the situation, capturing a 1,000kg crocodile.
