Four people were killed and at least 15 injured in three shootings in Dallas’s Deep Ellum entertainment district in the early hours of Sunday (Nov 1), police said, with at least one person arrested and officers searching for at least one more.
Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux said the Dallas Halloween shootings happened between about midnight and 1:30am local time, and that investigators so far had no information linking them. ABC News reported the injury toll could rise because some victims took themselves to hospital.
Three scenes in Deep Ellum
According to police, the first call came at about 12:20am from the 2600 block of Elm Street. A second shooting was reported just after 1am in the 2600 block of Main Street, about a block south, and a third at about 1:35am in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street, roughly two blocks east. Comeaux declined to give exact addresses.
Police have not released a breakdown of casualties by location. NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth, citing the Dallas Morning News, reported that four people were killed across two of the locations and at least six were wounded at the third. Among the dead was Kaniesa Scott, 21, according to her family.
Arrests in Dallas Halloween shootings
Comeaux said at least one person had been arrested in connection with one of the incidents, and that investigators were interviewing people in custody as well as witnesses. No suspect has been publicly named and no charges have been announced. ABC News reported that police were looking for at least one more person.
The chief said officers were fully staffed in Deep Ellum that night, and that one officer less than two blocks away ran towards the gunfire and gave lifesaving care that revived an injured person. “This is completely unacceptable for it to take place in Dallas,” Comeaux said, according to NBC 5.
Mayor Eric L. Johnson said such violence was unacceptable in the city, while City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said police would keep investigating and work to bring those responsible to justice.
Police appeal for videos
Investigators are still working to establish what happened at each scene and whether the shootings are connected, and have asked members of the public to share any videos and photos they have.
NBC 5 reported it was at least the fourth shooting with multiple victims in Deep Ellum this year, following incidents on Commerce Street around Cinco de Mayo and on Canton and Elm streets in August.
