The FAA ordered airlines to cut 10% of flights at 40 major US airports amid the ongoing government shutdown, leading to thousands of cancellations over the weekend. Between Friday and Sunday, 4,374 flights were scrapped — about 6% of all scheduled trips, according to Cirium.
Delta Cancels 700 Flights
Sunday alone saw 2,015 cancellations, the 11th-worst day since 2024. Delta Air Lines was hardest hit, canceling 708 flights, or 14% of its schedule, followed by American with 565 and United with 418. The shutdown, now in its 41st day, has left air traffic controllers unpaid and understaffed, forcing the FAA to prioritize safety.
