PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Transport (MOT) is drafting amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 to require drivers convicted of drink or drug driving to pay compensation to victims’ families. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this measure would complement existing prison sentences, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance stance on drink-driving.

Current law under Section 44 provides 10–15 years’ jail and fines up to RM100,000, with harsher penalties for repeat offenders. MOT urged police to expedite investigations into a fatal accident in Klang involving Amirul Hafiz Omar, stressing courts should impose the maximum sentence if guilt is proven.
