The Penang Hindu Association (PHA) has highlighted a shocking surge in essential goods prices, with increases up to 400% ahead of Chinese New Year and Thaipusam. PHA president P Murugiah revealed findings from a price survey, citing tomatoes as the most affected, rising from RM1.60 to RM8 per kg. Other notable spikes include white garlic (190%), cardamom (139%), and black sesame seeds (95%). Murugiah also reported rising coconut prices, crucial for Thaipusam, with a shortage potentially indicating hoarding. He criticized retailers exploiting the festive season with excessive markups, disproportionately impacting the B40 group already struggling with high living costs.
