The Penang Hindu Association (PHA) has refuted claims that hardcore poverty in Penang has been eradicated, highlighting the struggles of many families unable to cope with rising costs. PHA president P. Murugiah revealed that some families are so impoverished that they surrender their children to orphanages. Despite reports of declining poverty rates, Murugiah argued the realities on the ground, including urban poverty, tell a different story. High rents, escalating food costs, and insufficient income exacerbate hardships for families earning below RM1,700 monthly. He urged expedited government action to address rising costs and improve housing affordability, emphasizing cash aid alone is insufficient.
