The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has unanimously ruled that Russia is responsible for the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 onboard. The court also found Russia guilty of systematic human rights violations in Ukraine, including indiscriminate military attacks, executions without trial, torture, and forced detentions of civilians. Ahead of the verdict, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declared Russia would not comply with any ruling, dismissing it as invalid. The ECHR, based in Strasbourg under the Council of Europe, expelled Russia in 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine, marking deepening legal and diplomatic isolation.
