On Twitter a netizen mentioned that if you have darker skin or a warm tone, and someone with fair skin says they’d want to be tanned you just would not believe them. She further went on to say that usually people idolise darker toned people with good facial features.
The common saying for the darker skinned people in Malaysia is “kalau putih sikit mesti cantik”, which is as highly offensive as it can get. One woman even went on to say that despite being darker skinned, she had 2 fair skinned children and everyone complimented her for having fair children.
Others are mentioning that some people with lighter skin would go on to say ‘I wish I had tanned skin’ while using skin whitening products. Using skin whitening products can lead to numerous complications to one’s complexion if executed wrongly, and with it being the 2020s, be proud of the way you were born.
