DailyMail.co.uk — A Minnesota man allegedly tried to break Luigi Mangione out of his New York jail by posing as an FBI agent in a brazen plot that was ultimately foiled, police said. Mark Anderson, 36, was charged Thursday with impersonating a federal agent after attempting to sneak Mangione, 27, out of the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
Fake FBI Plot Unravels Inside Jail
Sources told ABC News Anderson approached an intake area to get close to the accused healthcare CEO assassin. He allegedly lied to officials, claiming he had paperwork “signed by a judge” authorizing Mangione’s release. The scheme collapsed when prison staff demanded credentials. Anderson produced only his Minnesota driver’s license before throwing documents at personnel. A search of his bag uncovered a barbeque fork and a tool resembling a pizza cutter.
The alleged escape attempt came just one day before Mangione’s court appearance, where a judge may decide if he faces the death penalty for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
