A 40-year-old man who allegedly passed himself off as an aide to the Raja Muda of Selangor has been arrested over a string of vehicle and property sale scams with estimated losses of RM1.42 million, police said on Wednesday (Oct 28). Photographs of the Raja Muda were allegedly misused in the scheme.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar told a press conference at the state police headquarters in Shah Alam that the suspect, believed to be the mastermind, was detained in Johor Bahru at about 5pm on Tuesday (Oct 27), Bernama reported.
The arrest came after continuous intelligence gathering linked to 26 police reports lodged nationwide since 2023.
Fake Royal Aide Used Same Ploy on Victims
According to Shazeli, the suspect used the same method on every victim, presenting himself as an aide-de-camp to the Raja Muda of Selangor and offering vehicles and various categories of property for sale.
Investigations found that the self-employed man held no position with, and had no link to, any palace or the Selangor royal institution, police said.
Shazeli said 15 reports had been lodged in Selangor alone, involving losses of RM960,020. Victims were also reported in Kuala Lumpur, Kedah, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Perlis. The suspect is believed to have been active since 2023.
Siblings Held for Allegedly Hiding Suspect
Police found the man hiding at a residential property in Johor owned by an acquaintance. The house is believed to have been his hideout after he went missing on Oct 13.
Two siblings known to the suspect were also arrested on suspicion of conspiring to hide him: a 26-year-old woman in Shah Alam and her 27-year-old brother in Johor Bahru.
Shazeli said police were applying for remand orders against all three under Section 420 of the Penal Code. Investigators are also checking whether any other members of the group or accomplices remain at large.
