Farmer Now Faces RM50,000 Fine for Alleged Facebook Offence

A 37-year-old farmer, Mohammad Faisal Mohd Yusof, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court to charges of posting offensive comments on Facebook. The alleged post, made via the account ‘Mohd Faisal Yusop’ at 12:40 am on February 9, was reported to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) the same day.

He is charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum RM50,000 fine or up to a year’s imprisonment. The prosecution proposed RM15,000 bail, citing a previous absence. However, Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman granted RM7,000 bail and fixed case mention for August 8.
