Federal Court Orders Two Men Back to Jail for Cannabis Trafficking

Two men who were released from prison earlier this year have been ordered back to jail after the Federal Court reinstated their convictions for trafficking 264.36 grammes of cannabis. Azril Azhar Ahmad, 50, and Zulfattar Md Ridzuan, 44, must serve the remainder of their original 30-year prison sentences. 

Federal Court Restores 30-Year Sentences in Cannabis Trafficking Case

A three-member Federal Court bench found that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that both men had trafficked the cannabis.

Justice Lee Swee Seng said evidence found in the vehicle, including a digital weighing scale, plastic packets and a penknife, supported the trafficking charge. The court ruled that the Court of Appeal had erred in reducing the offence to possession. 

Zulfattar was also ordered to undergo 12 strokes of the rotan, while Azril was exempted from whipping because he had reached the age of 50. Both men had previously been released on February 23 after serving reduced sentences. The original offence occurred in Seremban on September 26, 2020.
