A leading animal welfare group has warned against the growing trend of putting cats on harnesses, saying the practice can cause severe stress and fear by blocking their natural fight-or-flight response. According to Cats Protection UK, nearly one in six cat owners now use harnesses, up from 10 per cent last year.

“Taking your cat for a walk on a harness and lead is not recommended,” a spokeswoman said, warning it can make cats feel trapped. The charity’s survey also revealed shifting ownership patterns, with younger urban professionals increasingly owning cats, while ownership among older age groups and the traditional female dominance has declined, creating a more even male-female balance.
