FIFA has suspended seven naturalised Malaysian footballers for 12 months and fined the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) 350,000 Swiss francs (RM1.8 million) over falsified eligibility documents in June’s 4-0 Asia Cup qualifier win against Vietnam.
Naturalised Players
The players – Gabriel Felipe Arrocha, Facundo Tomás Garcés, Rodrigo Julián Holgado, Imanol Javier Machuca, João Vitor Brandão Figueiredo, Jon Irazábal Iraurgui and Héctor Alejandro Hevel Serrano – were each fined 2,000 Swiss francs and banned from football-related activities for a year. FAM, however, denied wrongdoing and vowed to appeal, insisting that FIFA had earlier approved the players’ eligibility. The ruling has cast a shadow on Malaysia’s “heritage player” programme, now facing questions over compliance with global football regulations. – Cover Photo: FocusMalaysia
