Space company Celestis is getting ready to shoot cremated human remains of 47 individuals from five countries into orbit this week with one of the dead people’s family members saying the person wanted to be cremated and sent to space.
The cray idea is to attach the remains to a telecommunications satellite launching from Florida’s Space Coast that will orbit the Earth for another decade. Celestis will also provide live GPS data of where the remains are at any point in time for their loved ones to track.
After the 10 years in space, the satellite will be decommissioned, taking the remains with it to be burned up in the Earth’s atmosphere during reentry.
